Our guide
The Tokoname Pottery Path is a walk through the old pottery quarter of Tokoname, on the Chita Peninsula — a town whose ware is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. It climbs the hill of Sakaemachi, past climbing kilns, brick chimneys and black tar-painted factory walls from before the mid-Shōwa period, and down Dokan-zaka, a slope whose retaining walls are built of clay pipes and shōchū bottles.
The walk is free and starts from the tourist information centre in the Tokoname Ceramic Hall, about 400 m east of Tokoname Station; it is open every day except over New Year. From Meitetsu Nagoya the limited express takes about 30 minutes (the all-reserved μSKY does not stop at Tokoname), and from Central Japan International Airport it is only about 5 minutes — so it fits well before or after a flight from Centrair Observation Deck.

What this place is
The Tokoname Pottery Path is a walking route through the old pottery quarter of Tokoname, on the Chita Peninsula in Aichi — a town whose ware counts among Japan's Six Ancient Kilns. It climbs the hill of Sakaemachi, where climbing kilns, brick chimneys and black tar-painted factory walls from before the mid-Shōwa period still stand, and passes Dokan-zaka, a slope whose retaining walls are built of clay pipes and shōchū bottles.
