Naoshima is an island in the Seto Inland Sea, the main island of the 27 Naoshima Islands, belonging to the town of Naoshima in Kagawa though it lies off Uno Port in Tamano, Okayama. It is a hilly granite island with little flat land, about 2 km east to west and 5 km north to south.
Its story has two halves. A Mitsubishi copper smelter built in 1917 made it an industrial island; then the Benesse-led “Naoshima Project” brought in contemporary art and turned it into an island known to visitors from around the world.
