Our guide

The Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group, also called Taisetsu-zan, is a group of volcanic peaks arranged around the Ohachi-daira caldera, about 2 km wide, in Hokkaido. These are the highest peaks in Hokkaido, and they give their name to Daisetsuzan National Park, in which they lie. In Ainu the mountains are known as Nutapukaushipe, “the mountain above the river”, as well as Nutaku Kamushupe or Optateske.

This is high, remote country. We have not checked trails, huts or conditions, so check local information and the weather before you go.
