Our guide

Arita, in western Saga, is the home of Arita ware, one of Japan's traditional crafts. Because it was shipped from the port of Imari, Arita porcelain was sold as “Imari”, and it is the root of the ware known as Ko-Imari. The old centre, Arita Uchiyama, keeps merchant houses with white-plastered storehouses and tonbai walls, and is a national preservation district for traditional buildings. Sueyama Shrine has the only ceramic torii in Japan, and the Kyushu Ceramic Museum of Saga Prefecture is here too. Arita is twinned with Meissen in Germany.

If you can choose your dates, the Arita Pottery Fair begins on 29 April each year. Nishi-Arita Station is about 250 m from the point this page is mapped to.
