Our guide
Dolphin watching in Amakusa takes place off Tsūji Island, north of the former town of Itsuwa (now part of Amakusa City) on Shimoshima, the lower island of the Amakusa group. Itsuwa faces the Hayasaki Strait, which leads into the Ariake Sea, and about 200 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins live in the waters off Tsūji Island.
Boats sail from Oniike and Futae ports, and the season opens with an event in late March. We have not checked operators, times or fares, so look at local information before you go. For the islands themselves, see Amakusa Islands.
