Our guide

Sumiyoshi Taisha is the head shrine of all the Sumiyoshi shrines, and it gave its name to a style of shrine building, Sumiyoshi-zukuri. It enshrines the three Sumiyoshi gods, together known as Sumiyoshi Ōkami, and Empress Jingū. Locally it is called Sumiyoshi-san or Sumiyossan, and it is famous for the huge crowds that come on New Year's Day for hatsumōde, the year's first shrine visit — worth knowing whether you want to join them or avoid them.

Sumiyoshitoriimae Station on the Hankai Line is about 250 m away in a straight line. Shinsekai & Tsutenkaku is about 4.6 km off.
