Our guide
Gekū, the Outer Shrine, is one of the two main shrines of Ise Jingū. Its formal name is Toyouke Daijingū, and it enshrines Toyouke no Ōmikami, guardian of industry and giver of food, clothing and shelter, beginning with rice. The shrine's records say that Amaterasu appeared in a dream to Emperor Yūryaku and asked for Toyouke to be brought from Tanba Province to see to her meals; food is still offered to the gods here every morning and evening. The grounds keep old camphor trees and the Magatama Pond, where irises bloom in early summer.
By long custom, pilgrims worship here first and then go on to the Inner Shrine, Naikū — on our site under Ise Jingu, about 4.1 km away in a straight line. Gekū itself is a five- or six-minute walk along the approach from Iseshi Station.
